| Abstract | The North Carolina Testing Program is based on the assessment of higher level skills, the skills required to solve problems and make informed choices and decisions. This guide explains the end-of-course tests that are a component of the Testing Program and provides information to interpret them. The end-of-course tests for high school students are aligned with the state's standard course of study and administered during the last 10 days of the course. Some forms of the Algebra I, English I, and U.S. History tests have been designated as "secure for local use" and are no longer considered secure for statewide use. Designating a form of the test for local use allows school systems to retest students after interventions, deliver staff development, and conduct research studies. For each item on a "secure for local use" form for these three subjects, this document provides the curriculum goal and objective from the state's "Standard Course of Study," the related thinking skill, the correct answer, and the p-value (percentage of students who responded correctly during the 1998 administration of the test).
