Abstract	This Kids Count report is the second to examine statewide trends in the well-being of Montana's children. The statistical portrait is based on 16 indicators of well-being: (1) low birthweight; (2) infant mortality; (3) child death; (4) teen violent death; (5) Medicaid participation; (6) school enrollment; (7) public school enrollment in Chapter 1 programs; (8) public school enrollment in special education; (9) children younger than 16 years in out-of-home placements; (10) child abuse and neglect; (11) child poverty; (12) public school enrollment in free/reduced meals; (13) child hunger; (14) births to single teens; (15) youths in alcohol/drug treatment; and (16) juvenile crime. The bulk of the data book presents the findings on the well-being indicators and notes trends when data are available; it also identifies factors associated with risk and resiliency. The data book concludes that Montana has relatively low rates of neonatal/infant mortality and a relatively high percentage of students graduating on time from high school. However, causes for concern include continued increases in the number of children living in poverty and births to single teens. The data book suggests guidelines for developing prevention and intervention programs and social policies. The final section of the data book provides county profiles, and contains data notes and acknowledgements. The county profile book presents statistical profiles for each county for the indicators, and also includes information on demographics, parental employment, single parent families, welfare program participation, school enrollment, and family risk.
