Abstract | The report summarizes the proceedings of a conference on less commonly taught languages (LCTLs). An introductory chapter describes the origins and organization of the conference, and notes the sponsoring organizations, languages represented by participants, institutions represented, and professional associations to which participants belonged. Three subsequent chapters summarize the plenary talks and small group discussions of the three conference sessions. Topics include: promoting and protecting the LCTLs (student concerns, teacher concerns, enrollments, institutional cooperation, marketing LCTLs, curricular issues); pedagogy and materials (teacher training and professional development options, teacher cooperation and communication, analysis of a survey of participants, availability of pedagogical materials); and delivery systems (governance, technology). Appended materials include the conference announcement and application, the text of the survey of participants, and a list of participants. (MSE) |
