AbstractThe College of Social Studies, which existed in Kikuyu, Kenya, in the 1960s, operated in the British liberal tradition and had a 1-year course similar to those of British residential colleges. The career paths of approximately 130 mature students who took the course were examined in a case study that was conducted in 1995-96. The names of 104 students were obtained from the college's annual reports. Full information was obtained on 54 students. Thirty of those 54 former students were interviewed along with former staff of the college, which closed in 1969. The following were among the beneficial course outcomes cited by the students and former staff: access to higher learning; career advancement; acquisition of a critical, analytical mind; widening of horizons; and acquisition of an appropriate work ethic, self-confidence, and enhanced self-esteem. A framework for analysis of adult education programs and 10 conditions for program sustainability were developed.
