Abstract	This guide draws on experience and lessons learned in a collaborative project between three adult education programs, the University of Massachusetts at Boston, the Boston Adult Literacy Fund to present a model for training immigrants and refugees as adult ESL and native language literacy instructors in their own communities. The model is characterized by these elements: community leadership development; a participatory approach to literacy instruction; a participatory approach to teacher training; native language adult literacy instruction; and collaboration between community-based and other agencies for program development and implementation. Mentors from each of the agencies involved worked with teacher interns from the participating communities, and training took place at several sites. The communities involved were Haitian and Central American. The guide contains seven sections: an introduction giving background information on the program and the resulting guide; a more detailed description of the program and its features; information on the project structure and participants; the approach to training taken in the program's training components; the transition from training to teaching; evaluation approach and methods; and project results.
