AbstractThis Kids Count data book examines state and national trends from the late 1980s in the well being of children in the United States. The statistical portrait is based on 10 indicators of child well being: (1) percent low birth-weight infants; (2) infant mortality rate; (3) child death rate; (4) teen accidental death, homicide, and suicide rates; (5) teen birth rate; (6) juvenile violent crime arrest rate; (7) percent of teens who are high school dropouts; (8) percent of teens not attending school and not working; (9) child poverty rate; and (10) percent of families with children headed by single parents. Section 1 of the report focuses on child care needs for low-income working families. Section 2 summarizes findings indicating increases since the 1980s in low birth-weight infants, teen homicides and suicides, teen birth rate, juvenile violent crime arrest rate, and single parent families, and decreases in infant mortality rate, child death rate, teen accidental deaths, and percent of teens who are high school dropouts or not attending school and not working. Child poverty rates showed countervailing trends, and are currently declining. Section 3 presents national profiles, including national indicator maps depicting state rankings. Section 4 contains state profiles, including state and national data and graphs depicting trends from 1985 to 1995. Appendices include standard scores and national rankings and multi-year trend data for Kids Count indicators. The report concludes with definitions and data sources, criteria for indicator selection, and primary contacts for state Kids Count projects. (KB)
