AbstractThis study examined the effects of race on first-year retention at York University (Ontario). Data were obtained from student surveys conducted in 1993, 1994, and 1995, involving a total of 1,864 first-year students, along with administrative records. The study found that the number of black students who left the university because of poor academic standing was almost twice that for any other group. However, an analysis of data on students who left the university in good and poor academic standing indicated no significant racial differences. It was found that grade point average (GPA) was the primary determinant of enrollment status for black and East Indian students, while for students of Chinese and "other" origins, GPA and the value placed upon obtaining a degree were determining factors of enrollment status. For students of European origin, Ontario Academic Credit marks in high school, GPA, academic involvement, and the value placed upon obtaining a degree were determining factors of enrollment status, in line with a student integration model of retention.
