AbstractThe DACUM (Developing A Curriculum) occupational analysis process provides a systematic way to look at worker duties and tasks so that important knowledge, skills, standards, tools, and attitudes can be handed on to the next generation of workers. Revamped by The Ohio State University's Center on Education and Training for Employment, DACUM captures each task in sufficient detail so interventions such as training and development, job reengineering, recruitment, standard operating procedures, and performance standards can be developed and applied effectively. The DACUM process involves a 2-day workshop attended by a trained DACUM facilitator and a panel of 5-12 expert workers from the position or occupation being analyzed. The panel guided by the facilitator work collaboratively to develop a profile chart by breaking the job out into duties and then breaking out each duty into related tasks. Although DACUMs were first introduced to the manufacturing areas of Dofasco, Inc., the fifth largest fully integrated steel mill in North America, they have found their way into many nonmanufacturing areas such as human resources, sales, and purchasing. (The paper is followed by 4 sections that include the following: 29 overheads; instructions for developing performance standards; sample learning guide with terminal performance standard, enabling objectives; learning experience sheets, information sheets, and performance evaluation; and job aids.)
