Abstract | This volume for instructors contains general information about gender equity in mathematics, science, and technology (MST) education, teaching activities, learning assessment materials, and suggestions for action research projects to be carried out for students. The second volume for students contains source materials for use with various activities, as well as bibliographic and other resource listings. Part 1 gives an overview of the issues and statistics on girls and women in MST education and employment. Part 2, "Teaching Activities," contains nearly 200 activities to prepare students to teach MST equitably to girls and boys. These were tested, and in some cases, originated, by participants in the Teacher Education Equity Project, which worked with 61 teacher educators over 3 years. The activities are arranged according to six equity themes: (1) MST as male domains; (2) cultural expectations of peers, teachers, parents, and society; (3) biased and inappropriate curriculum materials; (4) classroom interaction and atmosphere; (5) anti-intellectualism and attributional style; and (6) testing and assessment. Under each equity theme, the details of how it is played out in the classroom and specified and explained in single-line boxes for subsidiary themes. A number of activities are presented for each subsidiary theme. Part 3, "Assessing Your Students' Gender Equity Learning," provides sample scenarios and essay questions, and Part 4, "Action Research Projects," presents materials for enable students to conduct their own gender equity research.
