AbstractThis third annual Kids Count report examines statewide trends in the well-being of Washington's children. The statistical portrait is based on five general areas of children's well-being: family and community, economic well-being, health, education, and safety and security. The 19 key indicators of child well-being are: (1) single parent families; (2) teen birth rate; (3) births to unmarried women; (4) children in out-of-home care; (5) poor children; (6) unemployment; (7) infant mortality; (8) low birthweight; (9) immunization; (10) late prenatal care; (11) tobacco use; (12) alcohol use; (13) eighth grade math scores; (14) high school dropout rate; (15) death rate from accidents; (16) child abuse and neglect; (17) arrest rate; (18) firearm deaths; and (19) incarceration. Results are presented as a state summary and track available data ranging from 1970 through 1992. Summary information and specific information is presented in each of the five general areas examined. The report indicates an increase in violent behavior among teenagers, declining standardized test scores, and high dropout rates for minority youth. However, decreases were shown in deaths from motor vehicle accidents, teen birth rates, and infant mortality. Immunization rates and prenatal care rates have also improved. (SD)
