| Abstract | This paper addresses those characteristics of effective and efficient hypermedia presentations that are important for consideration by educators in developing and/or selecting such presentations. Definitions of hypertext, hypermedia, and multimedia are provided, and the relationships among these terms are described. Four other terms useful to developers and users of hypermedia presentations--characteristic, interactivity, presentation, and user--are also defined. Characteristics of a hypermedia presentation are then discussed. The following topics are addressed: (1) content quality, including accuracy, completeness, distraction, need, special/political considerations, and structure; (2) design quality, including color, image size, user control, media (text, animation, audio, video, images), navigation, record keeping, security, and pacing/timing; and (3) operation quality, including audience, costs, feedback, methods of delivery, objectives, preparation/delivery platforms, rewards, and setting.
