Abstract | This book for children (ages 8 to 14) and accompanying teacher/parent guide presents the story of two young friends, one of whom uses a wheelchair and coaches her friend in coping with a broken leg. Information on the disability is deliberately presented subtly and incidentally to encourage the reader to relate more personally and foster a deeper level of acceptance and inclusion. The guide offers extensive learning activities related to the book. Included are pre-reading activities, journal and writing activities, vocabulary and spelling activities, suggestions on the inclusive educational environment, cooperative learning lessons (covering art expression, physiology, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and spinning wheels), and post-reading activities. Also included are charts to help the teacher adapt the environment and learning expectations to individual children with specific disabilities. Attached is a list of resources including organizations, books, computer software, and World Wide Web sites. (DB) |
