AbstractThe rationale for using sites and materials from the World Wide Web for second language instruction is explored; the technology used in gaining access to those resources is explained briefly; and integration of those resources into the curriculum is discussed. Website addresses are noted throughout. Three approaches to network searches are outlined: materials to support a specific lesson; expansion of the teacher's personal collection of sites and resources (curriculum-driven); and exploration of collections compiled by other language educators. Basic tools and terminology explained include electronic mail, mailing lists, remote log-in, gophers, file transfer protocol, net user groups, World Wide Web, helper applications in web browsers, and search engines. It is argued that resources from the World Wide Web are plentiful, readily available, current, visually oriented and appealing to students, and often interactive. Four examples illustrating the use of Internet materials to support curricular objectives are offered. It is also noted that new national standards for second language learning can be used to both select and apply World Wide Web resources to language instruction and lifelong language use.
