Abstract	The use of English-language films as tools for teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) at the university level is examined. The perspective in this paper is that both strong communicative skills and cross-cultural understanding are crucial components of ESL instruction, thus authentic English-language films (i.e., those made for the entertainment of native English speakers and not for ESL didactic purposes) are ideal pedagogical tools to accomplish this dual goal. Three main themes are developed in the discussion: (1) the interconnection between language and culture; (2) use of anglophone films as a window on the popular culture of English-speaking societies; and (3) inclusion of film in ESL courses as a way of providing students with academic experiences that are both aesthetic and intellectual rather than purely cognitive. In addition to presenting a review of relevant literature, examples from ESL courses at the Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana at Iztapalapa (Mexico) using film as an integral part of English language and cultural instruction are highlighted.
