Abstract | A study examined the relevance of vocational information and guidance for the equal access of girls and women to technical/vocational education in the following countries: Argentina; India; Mexico; Republic of Korea; South Africa; Spain; Sweden; Turkey; United Arab Emirates; and Zambia. Case studies were conducted by using a multiple-strategy approach that involved combining a structured 27-item questionnaire with materials describing national legislation, policy, and implementation plans and materials describing programs. The questionnaires, which were completed by in-country collaborators, focused on three broad areas: national policy; vocational guidance programs, and transportable guidance components. It was discovered that most countries surveyed have national policies supporting equal employment and education for girls and women and that considerable efforts have been made within technical/vocational education to implement structures and develop strategies supporting increased enrollment, completion, and placement of girls and women within nontraditional technical/vocational fields. The extent of protection provided varied significantly by country. The study findings were summarized and analyzed on national and world levels and used as a basis for formulating recommendations to national governments and ministries of labor and education regarding developing vocational/career guidance programs.
