AbstractThis resource gathers together explorations of women's art from Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe, and the United States as a stimulus for interdisciplinary discussion and investigation. Part 1, "Art, Ecology, and Spirituality", focuses on traditional artists from Borneo, India, and Mexico, whose symbolic images are linked to goddesses of procreation, cultural creation, and spirituality. They augment awareness of the earth as a living entity whose destruction in any part of the globe affects all people. Part 2, "Breaking Boundaries" focuses on individual women artists/art educators of color from the United States, who have broken boundaries to create art that has had a significant impact upon their communities, but have yet to overcome barriers that prohibit their aesthetic achievements from receiving more than token acknowledgment from mainstream art brokers. Part 3, "Art and Nationalism", includes discussions of painters whose work reflects their personal and spiritual responses to survival in Eastern Europe in the aftermath of World War II. These essays allow cross-cultural comparisons and consideration of global issues such as ecofeminism, indigenous self-determination, racism, and the effects of nationalism. Black and white photographs and art reproductions are provided. (MM)
