| Abstract | Social studies teachers need to stress the concept of writing in the social studies. A quality curriculum advocates that learners write across the curriculum. Creating experience charts, developing and writing outlines, writing book reports and developing various activities around library books read, and writing diary entries are all activities which provide meaningful writing experiences for learners. Teacher-guided pupil writings of log entries and the writing and keeping of journals also provide practice for learners to review previously studied material. Writing a formal dramatization from basal textbooks or library books offers learners an opportunity to work harmoniously within a committee. The writing of creative verse or folklore can emphasize ongoing lessons and units of study. Writing should stress positive attitudes and feelings of the involved learners. Diverse learning opportunities assist pupils to acquire relevant facts, concepts, generalizations, and main ideas so necessary in writing. Challenge and encouragement from the teacher should guide pupils to make continuous progress on an individual and group basis in writing. (CR) |
