AbstractTeachers in the Netherlands were asked what their goals are with regard to the development of values related to labor in their students. The study focused on the role of teachers in education--on their opinion about the pedagogical task of education. Differences between general secondary education and vocational education teachers and differences between teachers in different types of schools were studied, along with differences among economics, social studies, career counseling, and subject teachers in vocational education. Data were gathered through a written questionnaire in which teachers indicated on an interval scale how much importance they attached to each of the specified goals related to labor, how much attention they paid to each particular goal, and why they had chosen that goal. Survey results from 415 teachers showed that teachers not only transfer knowledge and skills to their students but also stimulate the development of values related to labor in their students. Attitudes that teachers wished to instill included the following: one's own effort determines success; values related to adjustment to changing labor conditions are important; and one should stand up for him/herself on the job. There were hardly any differences between teachers in the various school types with respect to the factors influencing their choice of goals. Some variations were noted between teachers of various subjects. (Contains 17 references.) (KC)
