Abstract	This paper examines the relationship between Korean culture and the historical development of its kindergarten (preschool) curriculum. After reviewing the values that were emphasized in traditional Korean society, focusing on ethics, loyalty and filial piety, propriety, and gender roles, the paper provides examples of how these values influences prenatal and early childhood care and education. The history of formal early childhood education in Korea is traced, focusing on the introduction of kindergartens by Japanese authorities in 1897, the influence of educational theorist Friedrich Froebel and Christian missionaries in the early 20th century, and the development of successive National Kindergarten Curricula in South Korea after 1945. The paper outlines the main features of the 1969, 1979, 1981, 1987, and 1992 National Kindergarten Curricula. The most recent changes have been influenced by the ideas of Maria Montessori and emphasize basic education for daily living, social relations and sense of community, traditional values, and the restoration of national homogeneity and unification.
