| Abstract | Mentor teachers have an important role in inducing beginning teachers into the profession. They must be highly accepting of new teachers and be able to work with teachers possessing a wide variety of personalities and purposes. Mentor teachers must be chosen carefully. The mentor teacher should be highly knowledgeable about methods of teaching that might be used to provide for individual differences among pupils. A mentor teacher is able to use diverse philosophies of teaching to guide learners to attain more optimally. They also need to have a working knowledge of different psychologies of teaching and learning. Mentor teachers should be able to allay the fears of beginning teachers by offering necessary guidance in the solving of problems pertaining to teaching. Quality beginning teachers need to experience growth, development, promise, and encouragement to teach pupils to attain as much as possible. (Contains 13 references.) (RS) |
