Abstract | This article explains the characteristics of three categories of Computer assisted language learning (CALL) programs that can be used in classrooms with conventional computer systems. The first category is dedicated programs, those in which the teacher cannot make any changes. The second is authoring programs in which teachers can insert their own materials. The third is authoring languages, which give the teacher more opportunity for creativity but require considerably more computer expertise. Then it particularly focuses on the program, "Arbeit mit Texten," which has met with success among participants in seminars offered by the "Centri Linguistici" (Siena). It was originally created by a CALL expert in Munich for teaching German but can be used to teach English, French, Italian, and Spanish as well. How the program works and sample reading texts for students of Italian with accompanying exercises are explained in detail. The article has a bibliography that includes CALL bibliographies, books on CALL, CALL software suppliers, and CALL periodicals. (CFM) |
