AbstractThis book seeks to summarize what is known about sources of racial and ethnic prejudice in the United States and to identify ways that individuals and organizations can act to reduce intolerance and discrimination. The volume's 17 chapters are organized into four parts. Part I, "The Changing Policy Context," contains: (1) "Schooling and Social Diversity: Historical Reflections" (D. Tyack); (2) "Race, Ethnicity, and the Defiance of Categories (S. B. Heath); (3) "Youth, Interethnic Relations, and Education in Europe (J. Lynch). Part II, "The Shaping of Attitudes about Race and Ethnicity," contains: (4) "Developmental Processes and Their Influence on Interethnic and Interracial Relations" (C. T. Garcia Coll and H. A. Vazquez Garcia); (5) "Ethnic Identity and Multicultural Competency: Dilemmas and Challenges for Minority Youth" (N. A. Gonzales and A. M. Cauce); (6) "Becoming American: A Review of Current Research on the Development of Racial and Ethnic Identity in Children" (E. E. Garcia and A. Hurtado); (7) "Oppositional Identity and African American Youth: Issues and Prospects" (W. E. Cross, Jr.); (8) "Racialization and Panethnicity: From Asians in America to Asian Americans (K. S.
