Abstract | Noting the improvement in the quality of schools and education that occurs when parents are actively involved in their children's schools, this activity guide provides ways that parents can forge partnerships with schools on a variety of levels. Following an invitation from the United States Secretary of Education for parents to participate in the schools, the guide presents general ways to begin to build a community partnership for learning, and provides an alphabetized list of additional ideas for the beginning of the school year. The remainder of the guide presents activity sections on: (1) Helping Children To Learning the Basics and Core Academic Subjects; (2) Creating Safe and Drug-Free Schools that Teach Basic American Values; (3) Making College More Accessible; (4) Getting Technology and Computers into the Classroom; (5) Raising Standards of Achievement and Discipline; and (6) Teaching and Connecting Young People to Real Life Skills that Prepare Them for Work and Adulthood. Each of these sections provide key facts--areas of progress and areas in need of attention; ten specific activities; and a list of additional resources. Information on potential funding for an "America Goes Back to School" partnership program is included, as are sample partnership contracts for schools, employers, and religious institutions. (HTH) |
