AbstractIn 1995, there were 107 universities of the third age (U3As) in Australia (up from 104 in 1994) and Australian membership in U3A groups totaled 26,346 (compared to 20,788 in 1994). U3A membership in New Zealand was also up. In view of the increasing popularity of U3As in Australasia and the success of U3A networks in a number of countries (including France and the United Kingdom), the establishment of an Australian U3A information network has been discussed. Concern has been expressed that establishment of a national U3A network would ultimately lead to regulation and loss of autonomy. The benefits of teleconferencing in permitting information exchange between U3As located great distances from one another have been cited; however, the high cost of teleconferencing would likely prove a major obstacle in the creation of an Australasian U3A network. Recent studies of the demographics of U3A participation and the increasing trend toward participation in adult education later in life have indicated that the popularity of U3As will not likely be transitory. The feasibility establishing and using a U3A network as a vehicle for constituency research and increasing the links between U3As and tertiary education has also been discussed. (MN)
