AbstractThis guide for further education teachers focuses on providing basic skills support. Chapter 1 defines basic skills support, outlines some factors that have influenced this development, and sets basic skills support into context within a rapidly changing further education sector. Chapter 2 looks at basic skills screening and explores some issues about when to screen and whether to use a generic screening or a course specific assessment. Chapter 3 examines following up screening with further assessment activities that will provide the information to produce a learning plan that is relevant to each student. Chapter 4 looks at the essential ingredients within a basic skills support system. Chapter 5 examines the use of workshops to deliver basic skills support for students on college courses. It highlights the issues that need to be considered when developing this style of provision. In chapter 6, the use of partnership teaching is discussed. This is where basic skills staff work with the vocational lecturer to develop the language, literacy, and numeracy skills of students in the context of the vocational course. Chapter 7 examines the need for support to extend beyond that given to individuals or groups of students in a workshop or class setting. A conclusion focuses on the roles of people working in all contexts within a college. Ways in which colleges can refine and progress their provision in key areas are also highlighted. Appendixes include a 27-item bibliography and index. (YLB)
