AbstractThis report provides a formative analysis of youth demographics and employment and training issues in the state of Arizona. The report clarifies issues of workforce supply and demand--as they pertain specifically to Arizona's youth--and explores the match between work force demand and training programs. It is based on information gathered and synthesized on demographic and geographic trends describing Arizona's youth population, employment trends and labor market information, and information about existing work force preparation programs that serve Arizona's youth. The report concludes that, although the composition of Arizona's youth and the composition of Arizona's future job market suggest that there will be no mismatch between supply and demand, the match suggested is one between uneducated or undereducated workers with unskilled and semi-skilled jobs. In an era of equal opportunity, the statistics paint a picture of inequality. In disproportionate numbers, poverty, minority status, and poor academic standing are associated. The report suggests that education should be improved to prepare students for higher-level technical jobs. The report includes 13 tables and 14 figures, and 4 appendixes providing information on the following: (1) students with disabilities by type of disability; (2) public sector vocational-technical education programs; (3) Arizona employment program summary; and (4) economic conditions in Arizona. Contains 128 references. (KC)
