Abstract	This volume is the latest in a series of reports that the Educational Research Service compiles every 5 years to provide comprehensive demographic data relevant to educational analysis, projection, and planning. It provides data pertaining to the size and composition of current and future student populations, as well as other demographic factors. Detailed highlights are presented at the beginning of each chapter. Chapter 1 provides an overview of trends and projections in the school-age population of the United States--nationally, regionally, and by state. Chapter 2 describes national enrollment trends and projections from 1979-2004. Information about high school graduation and dropout rates is provided in the third chapter. Data related to children and families living in poverty is presented in chapter 4. The fifth chapter describes the changing racial and ethnic composition of the school-age population and examines differences in educational attainment and poverty rates by race/ethnicity. Chapters 6 and 7 offer profiles of the major racial and ethnic groups in the United States and data on legal immigrants, such as countries of origin, poverty, and dropout rates. Data on Limited English Proficient (LEP) children--their languages of origin and level of educational attainment--are presented in the eighth chapter. Chapter 9 provides information on family structure and birth factors, such as the number of parents in the home, parents' marital status, fertility rates for various demographic groups, and teenage pregnancy rates. Preschool-age population trends and composition are described in the final chapter. A total of 29 tables and 93 figures are included. The appendix contains statistical notes. Contains 62 references.
