AbstractThis book, which provides practical information and references for the prospective art therapist, is organized into eight chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the field of art therapy by presenting references to literature that provide historical overviews; descriptions of various approaches; and official definitions of art therapy. Chapter 2 focuses on three art therapists, Margaret Naumburg, Edith Kramer, and Judith Rubin, who demonstrate three different routes to art therapy, those of psychologist, artist, and educator. A literature review in chapter 3 gives an overview of art therapy training and research in North America, and compares this with that of British counterparts. Chapter 4 is a literature review of specific art therapist issues such as creativity's role, interpretation, transference, confidentiality, and methodologies. Chapter 5 looks at the art therapist in the workplace, addressing topics such as teamwork and boundaries, provisions for multicultural populations, and hospitalization effects. Another literature review in chapter 6 describes art therapy practices. Chapter 7 suggests prospects for paid employment in art therapy in specific settings within Canada, Ireland, Britain, and the United States. The concluding chapter, 8, is an appeal for recognition of the healing powers of art. The book includes an extensive bibliography and author and subject indexes. (MM)
