| Abstract | This issue of the newsletter "Prevention Forum" focuses on smoking among adolescents. The articles are as follows: (1) "Where There's Smoke--Will Prevention Put Out the Fire?" (Joanne Burgess), an overview of the Surgeon General's report "Preventing Tobacco Use among Young People," including interviews with prevention and anti-smoking activists; (2) "No Defenses: Keep the Smoke-Free Goal Alive" (Jackie Garner), on the economic and health effects of becoming a smoke-free society; (3) "Illinois Studying Tobacco-Use Prevention" (Barbara Cimaglio), outlining a three-pronged study of liquor stores' sale of tobacco to minors, local ordinances relating to tobacco sales and the laws' enforcement, and undercover investigations of the sale of tobacco to minors; (4) "Social, Political Action Favoring Anti-Smoking Ideals" (Joanne Burgess), highlighting tobacco taxation, public smoking restrictions, and youth access restrictions as ways of discouraging tobacco use; (5) "Dedicated Doctors Have Serious Motives behind Light-Hearted Antics," focusing on Doctors Ought to Care, a group that parodies advertising and mocks alcohol and cigarette companies; (6) "Not Just a Habit, Smoking Is Life Threatening" (Joanne Burgess), focusing on the addictive properties of cigarettes, the effects of second-hand smoke, and the health effects of smoking as teenagers.
