AbstractRedefining the objectives of preschool education for French-speaking Switzerland is an undertaking involving coordination among the nation's cantons (districts) and requiring the greatest care. The challenge is to formulate aims--and more generally to propose a coherent image--for preschool education beyond the sensibilities and the traditions of individual cantons. The new preschool objectives adopted in 1992 resulted from a multi-phase endeavor, including a pilot study conducted by the department of public instruction and by teacher representatives; a large-scale survey of teachers and experts in the field; and, finally, the study and modification of the initial set of objectives. The first part of this document presents the debates and decisions making up this last step, including survey findings regarding the language and scope of the objectives, gaps to be filled, particular objectives, and the extent to which survey respondents understood the intent of the objectives. The original objectives for preschool education are presented, along with the revised set of objectives as they were adopted by the Commission charged with redefining the preschool education objectives. The second part presents more detailed survey results, organized by canton. The opinions of approximately 800 persons directly concerned with preschool education are represented individually or in groups. The results obtained indicate that the set of objectives had an overall positive reception. In several instances, differences in attitudes about the precise aims corresponded to the expectations and the traditions of particular cantons. (AC)
