| Abstract | Experience America is a training program for Thomas Jefferson Fellows and Associates (TJFs) that seeks to build lasting links between the Americas by increasing foreign college student participants' understanding of U.S. society and culture and by providing opportunities for them to present information about their countries to North Americans. The training program incorporates clearly defined goals; concrete, measurable objectives; individually tailored experiences; incentives for participation; broad applicability; and cost-effective programming. This manual presents guidelines for the implementation of Experience America. The manual addresses eight topical areas explored in the training program: (1) family/housing, (2) campus life, (3) educational systems, (4) personal/professional development, (5) community life, (6) physical/cultural environment, (7) U.S. decision making, and (8) friendship ambassadors. For each topical area, an objective and suggested activities are listed. The manual also includes comments on budget and staffing for participating training institutions, suggestions for working with TJFs, a form for TJFs to report their experiences, and a model calendar illustrating ways in which activities can be programmed.
