Abstract | The 10-volume "Health Facts" series is intended to supplement health education curricula and provide a handy reference for individuals who would like additional background information on particular health topics. The emphasis is placed on topics and examples relevant to youth of middle and high school age. The seven sections in this book provide teachers with basic facts about the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) disease continuum from infection through illness and death. Across this continuum, the basics of this attack are presented. Also provided is a candid discussion of the behaviors that put a person at risk of HIV infection and the behaviors that can prevent its transmission. Information is provided to invalidate the many myths that surround the HIV/AIDS epidemic, including the notion of casual transmission and the possibility of insect vectors. Information is also provided on the manifestations of HIV infection, treatment, and public policy challenges. An easy to read reference format offers clear, concise data intended to familiarize educators with the most important facts about the issues and concerns. A glossary, a list of resources, and 24 references complete the volume. (LL) |
