Abstract | These nine cooperative extension bulletins provide basic information on various alternative agricultural enterprises. Discussed in the first eight bulletins are the following topics: business ownership (sole proprietorship, partnership, incorporation, cooperatives); business and the family (goals, qualifications, ways of ensuring family support, space needs, friends and neighbors, financial resources, start-up costs, time management); licenses and legal requirements (local, state, and federal requirements; consumer protection; employee protection; environmental protection; and licenses and permits); cost accounting (cost frameworks, allocation percentages, cost accounting systems, system design, management applications); budgets and the budget process (types of budgets, budget development, budget interpretation, enterprise budgets, break-even analysis, and sensitivity analysis); identification of domestic markets (obstacles to indirect marketing, packing and shipping, market outlets, market information); direct marketing of produce to consumers (farm markets; product sales potential; market research; marketing options; location, site selection, and facilities; merchandising strategies; promotional strategies); and international marketing (pros and cons, market entry, program modification, and payment arrangements). The final booklet is an annotated bibliography of 162 publications and 16 organizations for nurseries, landscapers, and groundskeepers. (MN) |
