Abstract | This book proposes an agenda of questions for people who plan for and seek to give some direction to the expanding use of computer conferencing and television for international courses. The book is the first comprehensive effort to gather together and summarize scattered research reports and to report experiments and demonstrations that suggest that a worldwide electronic university is emerging. The book focuses in particular on the goals, priorities, values and philosophy that ought to govern global higher education and the technology that best serves those ends. The chapters include: (1) Signs of the Emerging Space Age University; (2) Administrative Structure for Global Education; (3) Education for All the World; (4) The Challenge of Technology; (5) International Research Teamwork; (6) Connecting the World's Research Libraries; (7) The Emerging Global Encyclopedia and World Brain; (8) The Global Classroom and Instructor; (9) Electronic Textbooks for the Distance Student; (10) The Global Student; (11) Life-Long Education in the Community; (12) and Education for the Next Century. Two bibliographies, one a general bibliography, the other on the "world brain," are included. A list of resources for people who want to participate in planning for global higher education is appended. (Contains 375 references.) (KRN) |
