Abstract | This book reviews the turbulent period of political activity and student unrest of the 1960s and places it in a larger historical perspective. It analyzes the source of student activism, the roles played by the faculty, the spectrum of campus political opinion, and the history of American campus protest. Individual chapters examine: (1) the sources of student activism; (2) what recent surveys say about today's student protest movement; (3) the history of protest as it occurred throughout United States history from the Revolution to World War I and from the 1920s through the 1950s; (4) the relationship between college faculty and students during the time of student unrest; and (5) the political consequences of student activism. A new introduction attempts to account for a new wave of representative moralism, to explain the current issues involved, to locate sources of support and opposition, and to voice a judgment about the current situation in the American academic community. Reference notes are provided for each chapter. (GLR) |
