Abstract | This guide instructs teachers about the need to establish interactive classrooms, a place where students assume responsibility for their own learning through interaction with teachers, peers, and instructional materials in order to maximize the use of their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. The text, designed to encourage classroom implementation of this pedagogical approach, actively involves teachers. The information in each of seven chapters follows a basic instructional progression. Chapter 1, "Passive vs. Interactive Environments," develops the concept of an interactive environment through the use of an exemplar lesson and a contrasting nonexample. Chapter 2, "The Value of Interactive Instruction," provides the research and theory that undergird this approach to teaching. Chapters 3, 4, 5, and 6 are on listening, speaking, reading, and writing, respectively, in interactive, secondary classrooms. Chapter 7, "Instruction Planners," provides one-page guides for each of the language skills covered in this book. Each chapter presents numerous teaching strategies and lesson approaches and a bibliography. (LL) |
