| Abstract | This protocol explains the new system for assessing research quality at research universities located in the Netherlands. It discusses the legal and historical background for establishing a new system of quality determination in research, describes the essential aspects of the research assessment process and the particular tasks of universities/faculties and other interested organizations, and presents the procedures used by the review committee. Guidelines for the disciplinary committees to establish protocols per discipline and the convening of a review committee are indicated, and the agreements concerning documentation the universities must furnish for the review committees are provided. Appendices provide the planning activity dates scheduled during the 1993 trial year, the classification of disciplines and the schedule for the research assessments, and the composition of the documentation.
