AbstractThis report presents the findings of a survey of both the public's and Catholics' attitudes toward public and Catholic schools and school choice. While members of the general public were more likely to give their own community's schools a high grade, about half of them judged schools nationally as average. Responses were similar for Catholics. However, Catholics graded Catholic schools higher than did the general public in several areas. About 60 percent of the general public and 70 percent of Catholics supported using tax money to fund school choice. Slightly more than half of all respondents believed they had sufficient information about the schools in their community to choose one if school choice were an option. The report includes detailed findings on several question areas, including grading of the school attended by the respondent's oldest child. Also included is a rating of specific aspects of education, including knowledge of respondent's community's schools, opinion regarding the voucher system, and attitudes toward government-supported parental choice of schools. A technical appendix includes information on the sample composition, on telephone omnibus sample design, and on sampling tolerances. The survey questions are provided next, and these are followed by a section of detailed tabulations which makes up the bulk of the document. (JPT)
