Abstract | A proposal for school reform, crafted by Mortimer J. Adler in 1982, the "Paideia Proposal," resurrected the ideal of the Socratic teaching method and called for a three dimensional program to prepare youngsters for earning a living, preparing for the duties of a citizen in a democracy and preparing them for continued learning. The core curriculum would include language, literature, fine arts, mathematics, natural science, history, reading, writing, calculating, speaking and thinking. This core of general knowledge would be delivered by three types of teaching and learning: didactic teaching which is lecturing or telling, coaching, which is supervised practice, and Socratic questioning or guided discussion. In June of 1988, Sullivan High School in Chicago, Illinois, graduated its first group of seniors who went through 4 years of the school's innovative Paideia Program. Short bibliographies follow each of the five chapters. Seven appendices contain program schedules, an overview of selected readings for seminars in English, history and science in the Sullivan High School curriculum, 2-year reports on the Paideia proposal in Chicago, lists of principal operants of the program and the City of Chicago Board of Education personnel, and school improvement plans from 14 institutions. Twenty-four footnotes are included. (MLF) |
