AbstractTwo papers are presented that deal with hypermedia uses in Japanese education. In the first, "Evaluation of the Bunkyo Museum of Literature, a HyperCard-Based Interactive Video" (Hiroo Saga), a formative evaluation was conducted of a Hypercard-based interactive video on Japanese literature. An initial study was conducted with 57 college sophomores who were education majors and used the medium as a learning tool. Later studies using 20 adult employees of an education agency with 17 college education majors as control subjects further identified the strengths and weaknesses of the product. The flexibility of the system and its potential usefulness were countered by a few weaknesses, such as narrow focus. The second study, "Integrating Multiple Contents and Symbol Systems for Learning Japanese Literature" (Hiroo Saga and Yasuki Hamano), describes the background and process of developing the HyperCard-based interactive video for learning Japanese literature. The product, "The Bunkyo Museum of Literature," was to be evaluated formatively with various groups of Japanese learners. The first study contains eight tables and four figures, with photocopies of seven overhead transparencies; the second study contains an appendix containing two figures. The Japanese language version of the first paper is included. (Contains 13 references.) (SLD)
