Abstract | The information in this supplementary notebook is intended to provide teachers with additional materials, ideas, suggestions, and activities to help in implementing the Applied Communication modules that combine language arts skills with vocational applications. The Applied Communication instructional materials were funded and developed by a consortium of states and Canadian provinces in association with the Agency for Instructional Technology. Fifteen modules discuss student assessment, writing activities, cooperative learning, teacher's role in cooperative learning, and hints for cooperative learning. Types of materials and activities include suggestions for discussions and field trips, charts, problem-solving simulations, completion of sample job applications, and rating sheets. Tests are provided for each module. The modules cover these topics: communicating in the workplace; gathering and using information in the workplace; using problem solving strategies; starting a new job; communicating with coworkers; participating in groups; following and giving directions; communicating with supervisors; presenting one's point of view; communicating with clients and customers; making and responding to requests; communicating to solve interpersonal conflict; evaluating performance; upgrading, retraining, and changing jobs; and improving the quality of communication. Some additional forms and samples are appended. (YLB) |
