AbstractA survey of various reform efforts was made to clarify the similarities and differences between them and efforts to integrate vocational and academic education. The survey revealed four distinct approaches to school reforms: (1) teacher professionalization; (2) curricular and teaching reform; (3) schools of choice; and (4) restructuring. According to the results of the survey, the most ambitious efforts at vocational and academic integration are attempts to reconstruct the high school. Elements required for reform efforts to succeed include the following: vision and commitment, consistent support from administrators and state officials, new resources--especially for release time and time for teachers to be together during the day, sustained effort, teacher training, teacher support, and shared power. (The report includes a list of 200 references, a 33-item bibliography, and 3 appendixes that discuss the 8 models for integrating vocational and academic education, teacher professionalism, and curricular and teaching reform.)
