Abstract | This curriculum unit is part of a larger project designed to introduce communication-based, culturally specific instructional materials on French-speaking African societies into the foreign language curriculum with the goal of increasing the appeal and relevance of French language study, especially to African-American students. The materials, which are intended for beginning-level French students, employ a communication-based approach to language learning with the goal of helping students to develop the skills necessary to produce and receive understandable messages. These skills include reading, writing, listening and speaking in the target language, and focus on materials in their cultural context. The lessons of this unit focus on family life in Francophone Africa. Each lesson includes a lesson overview, materials, lesson content, procedures, and student handouts. The lessons are entitled: (1) "Voici une Famille Senegalaise"; (2) "La Concession de la Famille d'Aminata"; (3) "Aminata Va au Marche"; and (4) "Les Contes Traditionnels." (DB) |
