Abstract | This report discusses the findings of a study of information about public school choice plans provided to families in the United States during the 1990-91 school year. The report evaluates information collected from school districts, state departments of education, national and local nonprofit organizations promoting informed participation in school choice plans, and the federal government. The materials are evaluated within a framework consisting of three components: (1) the content of the information; (2) the format used to present the information; and (3) the methods used for distribution of the information. The report discusses the ways in which information systems have been designed to deal with equity issues, and raises concerns about the factors that lead to inequitable availability of information. The report concludes by noting the lack of quantitative information included in the materials and the important role of in-person experiences in the process of communicating information about schools to parents. Appended is a list of materials about schooling options. (MM) |
