AbstractThis booklet examines the role of business in school restructuring and the types of precollege activities in which business is currently engaged. Chapter 1 briefly discusses what restructuring means including its salient features and general method of operation. The second chapter looks at why restructuring is so difficult, and identifies two challenges faced by business in school restructuring--to develop a consensus for change, and to create a stable environment that encourages system changes. Chapter 3 identifies the characteristics of restructured schools and examines the changing roles and relationships involved. Chapter 4, by far the longest in the booklet, offers examples of programs that are designed to achieve the following outcomes: increased student learning; extended teacher capacity; innovative school systems; and effective measurement of academic success. The final chapter offers suggestions to help business leaders choose entry points into feasible education support programs that are consonant with their corporation's interests and resources. Guidelines are also provided for implementing and managing the projects they fund. The appendices contain a business plan for education support and a list of resource organizations.
