AbstractThe behavior and rehearsal habits of elementary level instrumental music students were addressed by the implementation of a behavior contract and computer managed recordkeeping system. A contract was developed following the principles of the "Assertive Discipline" system. Rewards and incentives were used to reinforce positive student behavior. These rewards included but were not limited to computer generated positive notes and a band point system enabling students to earn points in order to obtain awards such as trophies, plaques, and ribbons. In addition to listing student and teacher expectations, the contract outlined parent obligations regarding the prompt payment of music fees. Results proved the contract to be effective in improving student behavior as well as parental fee payment patterns. The drop out rate for band students was greatly improved as a result of the interventions employed. The subjects of parental involvement and computer based record-keeping are also addressed. Steps for organizing, enlisting parental help, and funding an after school music program are also outlined. (Author)
