AbstractA study was conducted in the seven Acadian regions of Nova Scotia to identify the basic educational needs of the Acadian population, identify appropriate responses to those needs, and develop recommendations for adult literacy, basic education, and academic continuing education. Results are presented in this report, in both French and English. An introductory section describes the province's mandate for the research and the methodology used. The second section profiles Nova Scotia's Acadian demography, history and educational system, changing economy, and the educational implications of these factors. Section 3 provides working definitions of terminology used in the study (literacy, adult basic education, academic upgrading, schooling levels, and refrancisation). In sections 4 and 5, the literacy situation among the francophone populations of Canada and Nova Scotia, respectively, are sketched. The sixth section identifies organizations and institutions that could coordinate efforts for francophone literacy. Conclusions and recommendations are made in section 7. Materials appended to the French version of the document consist of a list of contact people for the study, the questionnaire used and tabulated responses, and a 96-item bibliography.
