| Abstract | Project CARE, a workplace literacy partnership between Louisiana State University Medical Center and Louisiana State University-Shreveport, surpassed its goal to influence 485 employees and to enroll at least half that number. The project also provided training seminars for front-line supervisors and revised documents. All data and information were collected and analyzed on an ongoing basis. Workplace-related materials were collected and analyzed for an industry-specific, computer-assisted instruction program to teach basic literacy skills to entry-level health care workers. Demonstrable improvement in basic skills of learners was evident in improved math, writing, and basic communication scores on Educational Testing Service Quantitative, Document, and/or Prose Literacy Tests and self-reports of improved oral skills. External dissemination activities included information provided at conferences, articles published in professional journals, affiliations with local and state literacy groups, and satellite courses and programs. Internal dissemination activities included newsletters, flyers, posters, and displays. A third-party evaluation found that Project CARE improved participants' work-related literacy skills and laid the groundwork for an ongoing cooperative effort to upgrade skills and opportunities of entry-level employees.
