AbstractThis survey of Minnesota colleges of education describes the availability of courses for prospective teachers which promote greater parental involvement in elementary and secondary schools. Survey results are based on information in course catalogs for the 1991-92 academic year in the 27 Minnesota colleges and universities offering a degree program in education. Findings indicate that despite extensive research showing the need for and positive impact of parent involvement on student learning, the undergraduate teacher preparation programs currently offered in Minnesota do not appear to respond to this need. Less than half of the 27 teacher preparation programs in the state offer courses that focus on helping future teachers learn to involve parents as active partners in the teaching of their children. Three course descriptions illustrate the types of courses identified as parent involvement courses emphasizing the ways future K-12 teachers can increase the active role of parents in their children's education. Two appendices are included: the first lists parent involvement courses offered at the colleges and universities surveyed; the second details the courses in the first appendix using course descriptions from the college or university's most recent catalog.
