AbstractThis guide offers information and supporting materials to educators wishing to establish a high school equivalency program, drawn from experience with the External Diploma Program of Boston's (Massachusetts) Chinese American Civic Association. The program focuses on developing the reading and writing skills of non-English-speaking immigrants. An introductory section describes the equivalency program. A second section discusses the role of three writing types (dialogue journals, creative writing, and essay writing) in developing writing skills. The three subsequent sections describe specific classroom procedures for each of these writing task types, and include worksheets, anecdotal information about class activities, some student writing samples, and other supporting materials. The sixth section discusses two reading strategies, prediction and vocabulary development. Section seven elaborates on the use of newspapers for classroom reading exercises. This is followed by a section discussing potential topic areas for class discussion and writing assignments. A set of class rules and a 17-item bibliography are appended.
